About two months ago, I was on the hunt for a new lipbalm when these adorable vintage-inspired tubes from Shophouse Sixtyfive caught my eye. Handmade by the brand’s Founder and Creative Head, Petrina Yuen, each lipbalm is named after well-known local references. Expect to see terms like “Rose Bandung” and “Fort Canning” when you browse through the current offerings, my favourites being Sentosa Island and Sir Stamford, both of which I got for myself!

Where do I even start with this review? It was love at first swipe. These lipbalms are easily some of the most wonderful beauty products I’ve ever used. They are incredibly soft and get even softer when they come into contact with body heat. The balms smell amazingly delicious – I couldn’t stop smelling my tube of Sentosa Island when I first started using it! On top of that, the balm sits comfortably on your lips and tastes good too when you can’t resist and go in for a little lick. I have to admit that I’m more in love with Sentosa Island than I am with Sir Stamford, simply because I am more drawn to the sweet, cotton candy smell of Sentosa Island!

Each lipbalm is handmade using a blend of beeswax and premium essential oils. Over two months of daily usage, I’ve managed to use about one quarter of a tube, which leads me to estimate that one tube will last about 8-10 months, depending on how often you use it. These balms will make amazing gifts for friends or family members who appreciate quirky, quality cosmetics (as a Mother’s Day gift, perhaps?). Compared to drugstore lipbalms, these are priced slightly higher at $9.50 per balm and $16.80 for two, which, in my opinion, is a reasonable price to pay for handmade, quality goods crafted locally and inspired by local culture.

For readers outside Singapore, these balms will be great exotic additions to your makeup kits and a great way to start conversations. The Singaporean culture is quite unique – how cool would it be to carry a small bit of this country with you everywhere you go?
