Beauty Essentials: Sunblock

Oh wow, how warm the weather has been! It’s been crazy sunny here in Singapore and everyday I have to force myself out of the door when all I want to do is lock myself inside a cool room all day and not have to face the heat. Sunblock has always been an essential item in my makeup collection, even more so during these past few weeks. I thought that I’d share with you the products that I use for daily UV protection and some of the options that you have if you are thinking of stocking up on some sunblock soon.

I alternate between three different sunblocks, all from Za: The True White EX Power Block UV, Perfect Protector and Day Protector. If you’re wondering why I have so many, I used to intern at a digital ad agency and we would receive beauty products during press events. They gave out a pack which included these three sunblocks, so I got all three for free, yay! I couldn’t tell the difference between them at first but they are each special in their own subtle ways. Of course, you wouldn’t need three sunblocks all at once, so just read on to find out more about each product and make your decision based on your preferences and day-to-day habits! And just so you know, I don’t really take notice of any “whitening” effects that the product has, so I won’t be talking about any of that in this post.

1. True White EX Power Block UV

This sunblock is quite peculiar because it is watery. I’ve never encountered watery sunblock before, not even with Biore UV Aqua Rich Watery Essence Sunscreen and that was water-based! Before application, I always have to make sure that I shake the bottle well so the product would mix properly inside the bottle. A little of this goes a long way and although it isn’t oily and doesn’t leave my skin feeling sticky, I can still feel the layer of sunblock sitting on my skin. I only use this when I’m heading out with no makeup on.

2. True White EX Perfect Protector

Unlike the Power Block UV, this sunblock is a cream and is a lot thicker in texture. I actually find this one more comfortable to wear – it is super light and doesn’t have that sitting-on-skin feeling that the Power Block has. I use this sunblock under my makeup because it claims to act well as a base. Honestly, I’m not too sure how true that is but out of the three, this is definitely my favourite.

3. True White Day Protector

This sunblock provides the lowest UV protection with SPF 26, while the other two provide SPF 50. As such, I use this sunblock when I’m travelling during Winter. I brought it with me to Australia last June and it gave me just the right amount of UV protection that I needed during those months.

I love sunblock! I think it’s often a common misperception that people with darker skin need not apply, but yes, we must! My go-to sunblock is Alba Botanica SPF 45. It’s awesome!

Indeed, we must! I think people tend to overlook the risk of developing skin cancer from sun exposure. Thank you for your comment, I’ll check that sunblock out!

Sunblock is actually one of the most important, if not THE most important beauty essential if you ask me. Everything starts with your skin and having healthy skin is the key. Keeping your skin protected from the sun is the starting point. Thanks for the awesome review of these suntan lotions!
