    Bombshell In A Bottle

I am an absolute sucker for delightful fragrances. Be it Yankee Candles or shower gels from Bath & Body Works… give me anything with a good fragrance and I’m hooked. Strangely enough, I don’t experience quite the same thing with perfumes. Perhaps it’s the way I see perfumes as being a super personal way of expressing yourself and how I’ve realised how much they help to create a good impression when you go out to meet someone, therefore making me extra picky when buying perfumes. A perfume is part of self-expression, just as much as style and makeup are.

I’ve gone through many bottles of perfume in my 10 years of exploring beauty and fashion post-adolescence and I found that I am more attracted to fresh, fruity fragrances that are lighter. It always feels good to start the day with a fresh scent that will also help to perk you up during your mid-day touch-up. Victoria’s Secret Body Mists have been my go-to for the past couple of years, after I stopped swiping perfumes from my mom’s ever-growing stash. Body Mists could never fully do it for me, though – the smell usually goes off very soon after I spray it on, so I started looking to proper perfumes that can last me at least half a day, or even longer. About a year ago I got myself a bottle of Victoria’s Secret Bombshell to try out. I fell in love with the scent and one year later, I’m still hooked! I received Bombshells In Bloom as a birthday present last year and it is quite a delightful alternative to Bombshell. For easier reading, I have decided to review both perfumes as I would with makeup… or at least try to, to the best of my ability (I’m not very well-versed in perfume, I admit!).

    Fragrance
    Heart4.5
According to the Victoria’s Secret website, Bombshell has notes of “purple passionfruit, Shangri-la peony and vanilla orchid”. Because I’m not adept at describe perfumes or scents (also since I did not know that passionfruit exists in any other colour besides purple), I shall describe the scent as fruity and fresh with a slight hint of floral undertones. It is also rather sweet without being overpowering, which is a huge plus for me.

Bombshells in Bloom, on the other hand, is very floral, as its name suggests. On the website, it is described to have notes of “pink freesia, red apple and water lily”. Its scent is a little heavier and a lot sweeter than that of Bombshell, which balances the fragrance out pretty nicely. It’s a very “girly” perfume and makes for a good daytime perfume when you’re heading out on a date or for a brunch appointment.

    Packaging

Both of these perfumes are SO pretty to look at! The perfume bodies, I believe, are made from glass, while their caps are plastic. They feel luxurious to the touch and look super glamorous on a dresser. The only issue I have is that extra decorative elements on the caps are very flimsy. My Bombshell bottle came with a circular Victoria’s Secret crest at the front but that fell off pretty easily (you can see the glue residue in the photo above). The flowers on the Bombshells In Bloom bottle also feel dangerously flimsy – sometimes I fear that I will accidentally rip them off. Granted, these little things don’t affect the scent but for such pretty bottles, you really want them to last as long as they can!

    Staying power
    Heart3
Because I spray these on my wrists and on my clothes, they do stay on for much longer and I can still catch slight whiffs of them at the end of the day. However, I have read some reviews that they don’t have much staying power when only sprayed on skin. This I cannot verify, but based on personal experience, I am happy with both perfume’s staying power, though a touch up or two wouldn’t hurt. Nothing fantastic, but nothing too bad either.

    Verdict
    Heart4
Two absolutely lovely perfumes that I will purchase again. I have to admit, I do not remember how much Bombshell costed me but I believe that it didn’t come cheap. Nevertheless, it is an investment and I use it practically everyday, so I see that as justification for spending that much on a bottle. Also, one bottle can probably last you anywhere from two to two and a half years – that’s a pretty great deal, methinks! Also, did you know that Bombshell also works as an insect repellant? How odd!

Perfecting The Cateye With Maybelline Hypersharp Wing Liner

Hello, my friends! How’s everybody doing this weekend? Today I’ll be doing a review of Maybelline’s Eyestudio Hypersharp Wing Liner, a pen liquid liner that was released in Singapore not too long ago. I’m a big fan of their Hypersharp Liner (a similar-looking liner with a gold cap instead of a purple one) so I had high hopes for this one. The main difference between the Wing Liner and the regular Hypersharp Liner is that the tip of the Wing Liner is flat, with a wider flat base tapering down to a fine tip, whereas the regular liner just spouts a fine tip. Keep on reading for the full review!

    Smudgeproof & Waterproof
    Heart4
Like its predecessor, the Hypersharp Wing Liner claims to be 100% smudgeproof and waterproof. I was glad that it held true to this claim –  I can wear this eyeliner from day to night without worrying that it will smudge on my oily eyelids! However, I did notice that it does smudge if you apply too much pressure against your wing, but I believe that it’s a norm that will happen to all eyeliners if you smudge a concentrated amount that is applied to one single area.

    Brush
    Heart4
I am in LOVE with this brush, simply because it gives me more control over the thickness of my liner, winged or not. It isn’t a major innovation, but it is a smart design.

If you clearly observe the photos above, you’ll see that one side of the brush is flat. As compared to a rounded tip, this allows me to draw thinner lines and then thicken them out as much as I want to, depending on the look or the occasion. This really does give you so much more control over your look! There have been countless times when I end up with terribly thick eyeliner because the sides of the liner tip accidentally come in contact with my skin, a problem that I foresee won’t happen with this liner!

Now, the real question – does this brush really help to achieve a winged liner look with less effort? I feel that the flat brush does help with drawing on a cateye, however, you will still need a certain degree of skill and control to be able to draw on even wings on each eye – a problem most of us face in this world (sigh). That being said, I do think that it is a good beginner makeup eyeliner if you are looking to start experimenting with the winged liner look.

    Verdict
    Heart4
A great eyeliner that delivers. No surprise, really, considering its from the Hypersharp Liner line that’s always been great. It’s quite refreshing to have such a comfortable eyeliner after my terrifying experience with TheBalm’s Schwing eyeliner (perhaps I could do a review of this one another time). Maybelline did a wonderful job with this one – it’s my new favourite eyeliner! Do give it a try the next time you’re looking for a new liner and let me know how it goes! 🙂

Does Maybelline Lash Sensational Live Up To Its Hype?

maybelline lash sensational, lash sensational, maybelline mascara, maybelline, reviews, beauty blogger, bblogger, singapore blogger, makeup review, review, flatlay, mascara flatlay, fashion blogger, personal style blogger, style blogger

So I’ve been seeing ads and promotions all over social media for Maybelline’s latest Lash Sensational, a mascara which just was launched in Singapore last month. I have always looked to Maybelline for reliable mascaras so I thought that I should give it a shot!

Some first impressions: the packaging is so elegant! It’s a lovely rose pink colour that feels great to the touch, though it could get a little slippery upon application since its so smooth and the shape tapers out so much at the ends. The formula does have a slight chemical smell which isn’t too overpowering. Price-wise, it’s currently retailing at Watsons for $21.90, but the store is having a pretty good promotion now so I got it at 30% off with a two-item purchase.

Here are some promises for the Lash Sensational:

    • Fans out all your lashes
    • Gives 9X the volume
    • Waterproof
    • Smudgeproof

Today I wanted to see if the mascara truly delivers, rating each function on a scale of 1-5 hearts. Read on for the full review!

    Volumising & Curl
    Heart3.5
I am fortunate enough to have been blessed with long eyelashes. As such, when I look for a mascara, I always look for those that can add volume rather than length. I was hoping that Maybelline will deliver on this one but unfortunately, it falls short. It does provide *some* volume, but not 9X as promised (perhaps only 3X at most). It also doesn’t provide much curl, so I would prefer to use an eyelash curler beforehand to get the most out of the tube. Below are some before and after photos so you can see the volumising and lengthening effect, which I will touch on next.

    Lengthening & Separating
    Heart5
In this department, this mascara WINS. I don’t understand why it promises volumising when it does lengthening so much better. If you check out the photos above, you’ll see the huge difference in the before and after photos. It also separated my lashes so wonderfully! Lash Sensational definitely lived up in this aspect mainly because of the design of its brush.

    LashSensational2

The brush has two sides – the side on top in the photo has shorter bristles and managed to reach close to my lashline and separate my lashes, while the side at the bottom was great in coating my lashes evenly and providing the lengthening effect. Besides being able to separate and lengthen, this brush also gives you the option of using the top side to apply mascara onto your bottom lashes. I don’t think I’ve ever used a two-sided mascara wand and I’m glad that Maybelline managed to stay innovative this way instead of coming up with a strange brush shape that could be intimidating to work with.

    Formula
    Heart4
I really liked the formula of this mascara! It was so light and comfortable to wear, I almost forgot that I was wearing it a couple of times during the day. The consistency of the mascara combined with its lengthening and separating abilities make it a great daytime mascara.

Some people complained that the Lash Sensational was clumpy, but I did not experience that at all (thank goodness!). Perhaps the problem there lies in the application of the mascara with the two-sided brush. When applying using either side, I think it’s best to wiggle out the wand so that both the lashes and the formula can be applied as evenly as possible.

Another complaint that I read about the Lash Sensational was that the formula was difficult to remove. I was glad that didn’t face this, though it could also be because of my makeup remover (Biore’s Makeup Remover Cleansing Oil) that practically melts off all traces of makeup on my face, in a good way of course.

    Smudgeproof & Waterproof
    Heart3
For the purpose of this review, I wore Lash Sensational out for the entire day today, which included a trip to the gym. This mascara did not smudge when it came into contact with sweat, but it flaked. I noticed tiny black specks beneath my eyes after my workout! It wasn’t super obvious, but it was there. It only smudged just a tiny little bit when I tested the mascara under running water. On a regular day, this mascara would hold out pretty well against Singapore’s heat, humidity, and even rain, I believe. Not too bad! Just… find a way to fix the flaking problem.

    Verdict
    Heart3.5
A good mascara, but not great. It’s a perfect everyday mascara since it’s so comfortable to wear and it really does lengthen and separate your lashes well. However, it lacks in the volumising department so if you’re looking for volume, either layer a volumising mascara over this one or use a primer under it.

So did it live up to its hype? Yes and no… its main selling point was that it could fan out lashes really well, “even the shortest ones”. Kudos to Maybelline for delivering this promise but overall, it’s not a mascara I would purchase again.
