Boy, does it feel good to be back. After the end of my internship in early June, I flew off to Vietnam for a few days and then to Tasmania for about a week. It felt great to finally have a break and the week in Tazzy served as a sort of creative recharge, especially with the Dark Mofo festival that coincided with my trip.  Two months away from the blog has left me scrambling to pick up where I left off and I’ve been spending my days seeking inspiration from my favourite bloggers. Of course, I could be overthinking the whole process but it does feel nice to kick my brain into working again after being away from this personal project for a while.

Here’s a casual outfit that I threw on a few days back when I headed out for some street art-hunting. I snagged this backpack from the Ben Thanh Market in Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam. When I travel, I make it a point to find accessories or pieces of clothing that I can take home with me, be it handmade cultural goods or vintage clothing that I picked out from a store in the city. This bag is great for adding colour to basic ensembles, making it a perfect statement piece for days when I feel like dressing down. These black sandals have been sitting untouched in my shoe cabinet for the longest time, but are quickly becoming my favourite go-to shoes in this scathing hot weather that we’ve been having in Singapore. I’ve practically given up fitted pants altogether, opting for loose fits for better comfort. I have been scouting online stores for more pants to add to my not-so-growing collection… need more weather-appropriate clothes, asap!

P.S. Can you spot the Dr. Martens buckles? How cute are they!

Oh, Rouge & Ruche, how I’ve missed you so. Apologies for my short absence from this space. Over the past number of weeks, I’ve been weighed down by heavy work commitments which forced myself to pull away from Rouge & Ruche and focus on what’s necessary to survive in that rollercoaster of a month. I’m glad to see that some of you are still checking in every now and then, and I thank you for that. 🙂

A few weeks ago, I managed to shoot a quick outfit that I styled with this relatively new vintage button-down. My first instinct was to pair it with some black jeans, leather boots and a dark lip – a foolproof outfit combination – but it’s simply way too hot and humid for that kind of dressing. Instead, I threw on some loose slacks and some strappy sandals to keep myself cool in the terrible weather this time of the year. I believe that the trick to pulling off a head-to-toe baggy look is to roll up the sleeves a little. This instantly adds a slight girly vibe to the whole getup and makes it look more put together and less lazy. Of course, a dark lip helps as well – I’m wearing my trusty Revlon Just Bitten Kissable Balm Stain in Crush!

P.S. Just a quick shoutout to my girl Aisha who’s co-organising the 2nd Chances Market! If you love looking for vintage and secondhand treasures as much as I do, that’s where you wanna be this coming Friday 😉 Check out 2CM’s Facebook page for more details!

    Sunday night pampering

At the end of a hectic week, it always feels great to have some personal time to pamper yourself with a relaxing treatment in the comfort of your own home. For a couple of months now, I’ve made it a point to dedicate about 45 minutes to an hour to what I call “Sunday night pampering”. That timeslot was initially meant for me to clear most of my face mask samples but now, it has become a weekly affair when I exfoliate my skin and put on a face mask just before I go to bed on Sunday nights.

For a very long time, I’ve been using Lush’s Ocean Salt as my exfoliator of choice. This tub was a gift from a friend who was returning home from London. If I’m not wrong, I received it at a time before Lush came to Singapore, so I was super excited to get my hands on it after many years of watching Lush beauty hauls on YouTube. I’ve been using it sparingly ever since, only starting to use it more regularly sometime last year.

Ocean Salt is a facial scrub made of blue-green coarse sea salt with a fresh, zesty scent. The exfoliating grains are the right amount of coarseness – I’ve used another exfoliator before which was too fine and too gentle on my skin. Of course, this is a matter of preference – I prefer more coarse scrubs for my face because in my opinion, that feels more effective in getting rid of the dead skin cells and clearing the dirt from my skin. I’ve read a few reviews that mentioned how Ocean Salt can be used as a daily cleanser, but I feel that might be a bit too much for the skin to take. Currently I only use it once a week, sometimes twice when I want to quicken the recovery of some acne. I love how it leaves my face feeling soft and fresh, with that zesty scent lingering afterwards.

After I exfoliate, I put on a face mask to inject moisture back into my skin. Currently, I’m alternating between different masks from Dermal, all of which I got from Korea when I was there last December. These are great and I got them at a pretty good bargain, too. Tip: when in Seoul head to smaller stores to get masks in bulk at better value!

A scented candle completes the entire experience, don’t you agree? I got these three Yankee Candles as birthday gifts and I love them to bits! Currently I am burning the Sweet Apple scent (the red candle) and it’s deliciously sweet without being overpowering. The only peeve I have about Yankee Candles is that the more it burns, the lower the wick goes into the jar so it gets difficult to burn them again as time goes by. Make sure that you have a longer lighter on hand or you’ll end up burning yourself a few times like I did before!

It took a while for this to actually become a routine because it slips my mind from time to time and on other instances, I get a bit lazy and that tempts me to go to straight to sleep… but after a while I realised that it was improving my skin’s condition. Of course, this could be due to a number of different factors as well, e.g. my daily skincare routine or better sleeping habits, so it’s important to remember that good skin takes effort to achieve and regular routines do pay off when you understand your skin better and give it what it needs!
