Does Maybelline Lash Sensational Live Up To Its Hype?

So I’ve been seeing ads and promotions all over social media for Maybelline’s latest Lash Sensational, a mascara which just was launched in Singapore last month. I have always looked to Maybelline for reliable mascaras so I thought that I should give it a shot!

Some first impressions: the packaging is so elegant! It’s a lovely rose pink colour that feels great to the touch, though it could get a little slippery upon application since its so smooth and the shape tapers out so much at the ends. The formula does have a slight chemical smell which isn’t too overpowering. Price-wise, it’s currently retailing at Watsons for $21.90, but the store is having a pretty good promotion now so I got it at 30% off with a two-item purchase.

Here are some promises for the Lash Sensational:

    • Fans out all your lashes
    • Gives 9X the volume
    • Waterproof
    • Smudgeproof

Today I wanted to see if the mascara truly delivers, rating each function on a scale of 1-5 hearts. Read on for the full review!

    Volumising & Curl
    Heart3.5
I am fortunate enough to have been blessed with long eyelashes. As such, when I look for a mascara, I always look for those that can add volume rather than length. I was hoping that Maybelline will deliver on this one but unfortunately, it falls short. It does provide *some* volume, but not 9X as promised (perhaps only 3X at most). It also doesn’t provide much curl, so I would prefer to use an eyelash curler beforehand to get the most out of the tube. Below are some before and after photos so you can see the volumising and lengthening effect, which I will touch on next.

    Lengthening & Separating
    Heart5
In this department, this mascara WINS. I don’t understand why it promises volumising when it does lengthening so much better. If you check out the photos above, you’ll see the huge difference in the before and after photos. It also separated my lashes so wonderfully! Lash Sensational definitely lived up in this aspect mainly because of the design of its brush.

    LashSensational2

The brush has two sides – the side on top in the photo has shorter bristles and managed to reach close to my lashline and separate my lashes, while the side at the bottom was great in coating my lashes evenly and providing the lengthening effect. Besides being able to separate and lengthen, this brush also gives you the option of using the top side to apply mascara onto your bottom lashes. I don’t think I’ve ever used a two-sided mascara wand and I’m glad that Maybelline managed to stay innovative this way instead of coming up with a strange brush shape that could be intimidating to work with.

    Formula

I really liked the formula of this mascara! It was so light and comfortable to wear, I almost forgot that I was wearing it a couple of times during the day. The consistency of the mascara combined with its lengthening and separating abilities make it a great daytime mascara.

Some people complained that the Lash Sensational was clumpy, but I did not experience that at all (thank goodness!). Perhaps the problem there lies in the application of the mascara with the two-sided brush. When applying using either side, I think it’s best to wiggle out the wand so that both the lashes and the formula can be applied as evenly as possible.

Another complaint that I read about the Lash Sensational was that the formula was difficult to remove. I was glad that didn’t face this, though it could also be because of my makeup remover (Biore’s Makeup Remover Cleansing Oil) that practically melts off all traces of makeup on my face, in a good way of course.

    Smudgeproof & Waterproof
    Heart3
For the purpose of this review, I wore Lash Sensational out for the entire day today, which included a trip to the gym. This mascara did not smudge when it came into contact with sweat, but it flaked. I noticed tiny black specks beneath my eyes after my workout! It wasn’t super obvious, but it was there. It only smudged just a tiny little bit when I tested the mascara under running water. On a regular day, this mascara would hold out pretty well against Singapore’s heat, humidity, and even rain, I believe. Not too bad! Just… find a way to fix the flaking problem.

    Verdict
    Heart3.5
A good mascara, but not great. It’s a perfect everyday mascara since it’s so comfortable to wear and it really does lengthen and separate your lashes well. However, it lacks in the volumising department so if you’re looking for volume, either layer a volumising mascara over this one or use a primer under it.

So did it live up to its hype? Yes and no… its main selling point was that it could fan out lashes really well, “even the shortest ones”. Kudos to Maybelline for delivering this promise but overall, it’s not a mascara I would purchase again.

5 Tips to Find Your “My Lips But Better” Colour

MLBB, my lips but better, my-lips-but-bettter, makeup, cosmetics, makeup tips, lipstick tips, NYX euro trash, neutral lip colours, beauty blogger, beauty blog, fashion blogger, fashion blog, personal style blog, singapore blogger, singapore blog, inspiration, NYX, NARS, MAC

For the past four years, I have found myself coming back to this one particular lipstick time and time again. It gives my lips just enough colour so I don’t look overwhelmingly made up, but just enough for a regular day-to-day look. It is inexpensive, easy to find and goes wonderfully well with my skin tone. I’m talking about my trusty tube of NYX Euro Trash, a warm-hued pink lipstick that has become my ultimate “My Lips But Better” colour!

What is a “My Lips But Better” colour?

A “My Lips But Better” colour (or MLBB for short) is a lip colour that matches your lips closely and only lies a few shades lighter or darker than the natural colour of your own lips. It is the perfect go-to tube when you want to achieve a more neutral makeup look e.g. an everyday look, office look or a breakfast date look. Most people would assume such lipsticks to have nude-coloured shades. That was what I was looking for at first but it was quite difficult for me because most nude-coloured lipsticks just make me look washed out and sick. I wanted a colour that still showed up on my lips but could pass off as a nude shade against my skintone. Thankfully, I stumbled across NYX’s Euro Trash – an everlasting addition to my makeup collection!

Are you on the hunt for your perfect MLBB colour? Here are 5 tips to help you out:

    1. Go matte

When choosing your MLBB, stick to the matte lipstick lines. Matte colours are great for everyday and are versatile as you can choose to layer it with shiny or glittery lipglosses when you feel like switching up your look every now and then. Be careful of matte but drying formulas (e.g. MAC’s matte finish lipsticks). Instead, look out for matte and creamy formulas. On days when you need to just swipe and go, you need a foolproof formula that is hassle-free and easy to apply. I would recommend NYX’s line of matte lipsticks.

    2. Keep way from the nudes

“Nude” is a lie. What we know as nude is also beige, which isn’t the nude skintone for many girls and women in the world. You know your skintone best, so opt for shades that go well with your skin colour or your skin’s undertone.

    3. Go for darker shades with brightening colours

Darker shades have a lower chance of looking washed out on your lips. At the same time, you want a colour that will brighten your look. Dusty rose-coloured lipsticks or coral-tinted brown shades are some colours that you could try out.

    4. Swatch your colours on the inner part of your wrist

When you want to find a colour that matches your lips closely, you want to make sure you know how the colour will turn out when you swipe it on. Do not swipe your colours on the back of your hand – this will not give an accurate colour payoff. Instead, do it on the inner side of your wrist. The colour you get will be a closer match to the colour you will see on your lips.

    5. Start with lipsticks from the more affordable brands

If you are lucky, you will find your MLBB colour on the first try. However, most of us might take a while to discover this wonderful shade of lipstick that is so special and perfectly made for us. If you fall into the latter group of people, you might want to start off with the more affordable brands of lipsticks as you navigate through the sea of brown and pink shades before you find The One. Neutral-coloured lipsticks are tricky, and it’s always best to purchase them at the counter itself instead of online. Some of these brands include NYX, Sephora’s in-house brand and drugstore brands like Revlon (that seem to be on sale every now and then).

Everyday I am thankful that I have found this wonderful colour and I hope that you will too! Keep in mind that these are rough guides to follow and you can switch it up according to your personal makeup preferences (e.g. you might prefer a creamy lipstick finish to a matte one). Happy swatching and I hope my tips will come in handy!
