I’ve had these striped flowy pants for the longest time, hidden away with the intention of altering them but of course, I never got around to that. So when a family occasion called for something a little dressier than my usual get-up, I pulled them out from the abyss and thought, “hey, why not?” Seeing a few iterations of baggy pants pop up during past fashion week street style snaps gave me enough confidence to wear them out. Once you get past the problem of having the hems drag against the floor from time to time, it felt pretty cool looking down and seeing them flounce around my feet. Past Liyana would have paired these with a pair of heels, but I’ve thrown in the towel with uncomfortable footwear. I threw on these Nike sneakers instead, bagged at a great deal during a recent trip to Johor Bahru.

I pulled the entire outfit together with a few swipes of Griselda by Fenty Beauty. This shade has won me so many compliments, it’s insane! I love a strong red lip. Plus, they make an even stronger statement when I match them to my scarves 😉

Don’t you just love a good pair of palazzo pants? Palazzos are some of my favourite things to style because they instantly dress up any outfit and help to create a beautiful silhouette with their cut and flow of fabric. I got these from the Hana Tajima x Uniqlo collection about half a year back. To create a contrast against the charcoal grey colour, I threw on a gold-ish satin button-down and paired the look with a teal shawl in a similar texture. I have to admit, I’m not a big fan of this scarf because 1) its rectangular (I like square shawls) and 2) the fabric is SO DIFFICULT to work with (I like stiffer fabrics). But the colour and finish of the shawl is so unique that I just had to get it for my still-growing headscarf collection.

A natural option to complete the look was a black and gold bag, which would match my black and gold pointed flats wonderfully, but I wanted a to create a fun outfit that could bring you from day to night, instead of an evening-type look. Instead, I reached for a bright orange tote from Kate Spade that created a delightful contrast against the bright teal scarf. Risk-taking truly does pay off once in a while, so don’t be afraid to try and play around with colours and textures in your outfits!

P.S. If you didn’t get a chance to shop for items from the Hana Tajima x Uniqlo collection, they’re all on sale now at the collection website! Happy shopping, and you’re welcome 😉

    Styling Overalls

It’s not everyday you get to see a hijabi in overalls, eh? For the longest time, I’ve been looking for ways to style this pair, which I got from Primark early last year when I was on exchange in Rotterdam. I was looking for a lightweight, affordable pair of overalls and the only ones I could find in Singapore at that time were from boutiques along Haji Lane that would have burned quite a large hole in my wallet. On top of that, they didn’t fit right and were made of pretty heavy fabric, which would not be comfortable to wear in Singapore’s climate. Imagine my happiness when I finally found the perfect pair in Rotterdam!

After styling these overalls, I found that the fit of the pair around your hips is important when deciding whether to purchase the pair or not. It didn’t fall very nicely around mine and hence, it did feel a little awkward when I wore it out (my size dropped quite a bit since last year). Thankfully, this pair has some belt holes to help solve that problem, though I won’t immediately and readily think of reaching for a belt when I want to style a pair of overalls.

The biggest question I had in my mind while putting together this outfit was, “How do I make this fun without looking too much like a kid?” Overalls are tricky because on one end, you could look trendy and fashionable but on the other, you could look like a kid or a farmer. I decided to style a fun, casual look but avoided the whole I-look-too-much-like-a-kid issue by finishing the look with a strong lip colour (Revlon’s Just Bitten Kissable Lip Balm Stain in Smitten), sort of an “adult” touch to take the outfit to another level. I layered the overalls with a pink printed vintage button-down that I got from the 2nd Chances Market together with some white Keds and a small black backpack. I was quite pleased with the overall look (haha, get it) and though it was quite intimidating to style at first, I feel a lot more comfortable with it now and definitely will be trying out more overall looks in the near future!
